Our opponents misrepresent months of budget negotiations and blame a minority member for not being able to prevent a double digit increase in taxes. One vote can't change a budget vote. However, one voice was heard over the others for months - warning tax payers that the majority planned to withdraw another million dollars from our fund balance, raise taxes by double digits, and give 18% raises to their assistants while not increasing services to residents. Councilwoman Richardson and Councilwoman Bingham made their position on raises for elected officials clear and gained ground through public pressure even from the minority. Together, they funded our community preservation plan, and exempted the Village from redundant highway charges worth hundreds of thousands. Our Republican opponents raised taxes by double digits through irresponsible lawsuit settlements and land acquisition decisions - including waiting years to buy the Rye Hill land after failing to recruit a developer, at double the cost.
We're running against Albany staffers, intentionally skewing the fact that 17M is a state road. Town Supervisors, Councilmembers, Mayors, Trustees and Highway Superintendents from across Monroe and Harriman have been pursuing repairs for years. Only NYS DOT can touch or repair the road. The budget for repair comes directly from Albany.
Calling your opponent crazy instead of campaigning on real issues and using personal relationships to justify political decisions is what seems mad to us. Maureen has the support of thousands in the community who know she's risked everything to do what's right for Monroe and take on the machine.
